The Road Race Canada Cup, at the 50th Anniversary International Motorcycle Super Show — January 9th, 10th and 11th.

Indoor road racing on the show floor, with the Super Sonic coaches racing each other for the cup. That is a genuinely great pitch, and the poster had exactly one job: make sure nobody wandered past the track at 12:45 not knowing something was about to happen.

So the layout is built around the schedule, not around the branding. Two sessions a day — 1PM and 4PM — set as the largest thing on the sheet after the title. Underneath, the run of show as a simple flow: introductions, then qualifying, then the race, with the podium ceremony immediately after. Then the line that actually makes someone stand still: watch the coaches battle for the cup.

Event graphics live or die on one question. Can a person walking by at an angle, in a crowded hall, under bad lighting, get the when in under two seconds? Everything else is secondary. Logos, sponsor marks and series branding all support the time and the date, or they get smaller.

A show floor is the most hostile environment a piece of design ever has to work in. Competing signage on all sides, no controlled sightline, and an audience that is moving and already overstimulated. You do not design for the person standing still and reading. You design for the worst-case glance.
